He was baptized 15 May 1597 in Parish Church, Ashford, Kent Co., ENG. He came to
Virginia before 1625, in which year he represented Charles City Co. in the
General Assembly. He rose to Lt. Col. in the county militia. In 1635 he was
granted 1700 acres of land in this county. Here he built Appomattox Manor, a
home that is still owned by Epes decendants. Ulysses S. Grant used it as his
headquarters during the War Between the States. It is located at Hopewell, near
Petersburg, VA.

Notes for Lt. Col. Francis II EPPES:
Conflicting notes about where he was born. Some say that his father came to VA
before 1625 (*see the notes under Francis Epes to verify) this means he was born
in VA in 1627.
The Lieut. Col. Francis Eppes II, of Henrico county, was born in england about
1628, and came to Virginia in 1635 as related.
It seems probable that his mother died in England about 1630-1635, and that his
father then brought the three sons and thirty servants to Virginia.
Unfortunately the records of Henrico prior to 1677 are no longer in existence.
Therefore, there is comparatively little record evidence about this second
Francis Eppes.
It seeems clear that he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Virginia militia. In a
petition to the Crown dated May, 1689, one Robert Jones of Charles City County
stated he served "under Colonel Eppes in the late rebellion". That is, in the
forces operating against Bacon (Virginia Mag. Hist and Biog., Vol25, page 140.).
The circumstances surrounding his death seem to indicate that he was fatally
wounded while actively campaigning against the Indians.
This Francis Eppes was the owner of a large store, believed to have been at
Bermuda Hundred.
He was a Justice (Commissioner) of Henrico County from 1677 (the earliest extant
record) to the time of his death (Ibid., Vol 3, pages 393-395.)
This second Col. Francis Eppes was twice married. By his first wife, whose name
is unknown, he had only one child: Col. Fancis Eppes III, born 1659. His second
wife was Elizabeth (Littlebury) Worsham, widow of William Worsham. By this
second wife he had four children: 1. Wiliam Eppes 2. Littlebury Eppes 3. Mary,
4. Anne Eppes.
The second Francis Eppes ws wounded by Indians and died in 1678, leaving a large
estate. His will, recorded in 1679, shows an inventory fo some three hundred
pounds, sterling, besides a large amount of peoperty, store goods, etc. not
appraised.
His wife, twice a widow, did not long outlive him, for she also died late in
1678; she left two eills dated July 28, 1678 and September 23, 1678, which were
proved in Henrico. In the first will she names as her executor Richard Kennon,
husband of her daughter Elizabeth Worsham. In the second will she describes
herself as the widow of Col. Francis Eppes and designates as executors Richard
Kennon and her nineteen-year ol step-son, the thrid Francis Eppes.
It is not known what became of her oldest sons, John and charles Worsham, but it
would seem that the responsibility for all her younger children devolved onto
Richard Kennon and his wife.
This closer relationship between the Kennon and Eppes families culminated in the
marriage of William Kennon and Anne Eppes, the children of Richard Kennon and
the third Francis Eppes.

"Francis3 Epes deposed 1 Aug 1691 that he was aged about 32 years but was
probably older since, as administrator of his father’s estate following his
death in Aug 1678, he must then have been 21. He was named executor of his
step-mother’s estate that same month. From his residence he was known as Francis
Epes of Bermuda Hundred. His home, then in Henrico County, fell into
Chesterfield County upon its creation in 1749. He was sworn as a justice of the
peace for Henrico County , 1 June 1683, was sheriff in 1685 and again in 1686,
and by 12 Oct 1688 was referred to as captain. In 1690 he was one of the
‘Commissioners for taking subscriptions towards a College [William and Mary,
chartered 1693] to be erected.’ He was Burgess for Henrico County 1691-92, 1693,
1702/3-1705 and 1705-06. On 6 April 1700 he was again appointed sheriff of
Henrico County and was appointed twice more on 27 April 1710 and 27 April 1711.
"He received numerous grants of land in Henrico County and on 24 Oct 1701, with
his half-brothers William and Littelbury Epes, received 1,000 acres in Charles
City (later Prince George) County on the south side of Warwick Swamp and the
north side of Joseph Swamp, due for the transportation of twenty persons. On 24
April 1703 a grant of 4,000 acres in Henrico County was issued to Capt. Francis
Epes, Mr. Isham Epes, Mr. Francis Epes, Jr., Mr. George Robinson, Minister, Mrs.
Elizabeth Kennon, Mr. Phillip Jones, Mrs. Martha Stratton, Mr. George Archer and
Mr. James Hill for the transportation of 80 persons, including a Francis Epes.
This suggests that Francis3 had been to England and back. In 1704 he owned 226
acres in Prince George County and 2,145 acres in Henrico County. On 28 April
1711 he, Joseph Royall and George Archer petitioned that they with Mr. Richard
Kennon had in 1690 entered 2827 acres in Henrico County but Governor Francis
Nicholson had refused them a patent because the land lay beyond the limits he
had set. Their rights were lost when the State House burned but they had
obtained new rights for the same land. The Council resolved that no patent could
be granted for this land until the Queen’s pleasure was known. He was frequently
mentioned in the diary of William Byrd as Col. Frank Epes, and as Col. Francis
Epes had land in Henrico County surveyed by Mr. Francis4 Epes, surveyor, 8 Feb
1709/10. On 26 April 1712 Col. Francis Epes, Mr. John Bolling and Mr. Richard
Cocke were appointed to hear and determine the differences between the
inhabitants at Manakintown about the division and proportioning of land.
"His will, no longer extant, was dated 2 Oct 1719 and it was presented for
probate, 6 June 1720 by Francis Epes, his executor. He and his brother-in-law
William Randolph (who married Mary Isham) were trustees of Bermuda Hundred Town

"Littlebury Epes was sub-sheriff of Henrico County under his brother Francis 3rd
in 1685, was a justice of Charles City County, 1699, and later, was sheriff,
1700. On 24 Feb 1702/3 he was appointed deputy collector of customs for the
Upper District of James River, to serve during the absence of Edward Hill in
England. He served as Burgess for Charles City County, 1710-14, and by 1714 anf
for many years thereafter was clerk of Charles City Court. As early as 20 Aug
1698 he was a captain of the county militia and by 27 Oct 1710, when his
election as Burgess was contested, was referred to as Col. Epes. In 1704 he held
400 acres in Charles City and 833 ½ acres in Prince George County.
"He was witness to the will of William Byrd I, 8 July 1700, and proved it 12 Jan
